PNO (Prepared New Objects) is a contemporary music performance and experimental theater work that emerges from a sociological inquiry into the piano. The work closely examines the complex network of relationships surrounding the piano—an instrument that has interacted with and shaped human history since its invention. It revisits the rise and decline of the piano in Korea, introduced in 1900, through the collective memory of “playing the piano.” The performance deconstructs the piano both physically and conceptually, presenting on stage the process through which a new instrument, “P.N.O,” is created from its constituent elements. This documentary brings together interviews with the creators and performers of PNO alongside footage from the production process, reflecting on the creative journey as well as the broader implications of the work and the instrument itself.
