PNO is an experimental performance that reimagines the piano not as a instrument, but as a cultural and material entity shaped by human time and interaction. Though the piano has remained central to music for over 300 years and continues to live deeply within our daily lives, some pianos are spotlighted on stage while others are forgotten or discarded. PNO begins from this imbalance, seeking to imagine the future of the piano.
Composer and performer Jaehoon Kim deconstructs the piano—its structure, its history, and the accumulated human senses within it. Reflecting on how the piano took root in Korea and how many are now being abandoned, he breaks down the instrument’s mechanism—keys, hammers, and strings—and reconstructs it through sound, movement, and video. Through this process, the piano is physically dismantled into wood and steel, and reborn as a new instrument called “PNO.” On this new body, the “sonata” is no longer written in scores but expressed through fragments, gestures, and the echo of disconnection.
The audience witnesses the dismantling and reformation of a single instrument, encountering the familiar piano in an unfamiliar way. PNO asks us to reconsider the relationship between music, the human body, and the tools we think we know.
<PNO(부제: 철과 나무, 연쇄와 해체의 소나타)>는 철과 나무, 그리고 연쇄와 해체에 관한 소나타다. 피아노는 철과 나무의 물성이 인간과 만나는 지점에서 탄생했다. 이후 피아노는 인류 사회•문화사의 주요 혁신 및 사건들과 맞물려 발전과 전파, 그리고 부흥과 침체를 거듭해 왔다. 피아노는 300여 년이 지난 지금까지도 여전히 독주 및 반주 악기이자 작곡 악기로서 인간의 삶 깊숙이 자리해 사라질 수 없는 위치성을 점유하고 있다. 오늘날 프리페어드 연주 등 다양한 실험을 통해 피아노적'임의 경계를 넘어왔음에도 여전히 피아노는 굳건하다.
<PNO>는 바로 여기에서 시작한다. 연주자이자 작곡가 김재훈은 질문한다. 이토록 완전해 보이 는 피아노의 다음은 무엇일까. 피아노를 연주하는 인간의 다음은 무엇일까. 피아노는 스스로 합주할 수 있을까. 혁신과 회복 사이에서, 철과 나무 그리고 인간은 다시 처음부터 만날 수 있을까. 공연은 건반이 내려가는 순간 시작되는 피아노 액션의 연쇄작용을 해체하며, 재료 상태의 피아노 다시 보기를 시도한다. 최초의 만남이라는 불가능한 시도를 통 해 초기화된 피아노를 응시하며 그 본유적 성질을 다시금 처음부터 톺아간다. 작품은 그 해체와 재구성을 통해 가장 오래된 미래라는 역설적 시간의 장들 열고, 새로운 소나타를 써 내려간다.
